Melbourne – Junior UI Artist

IMPORTANT: Please note you will need to have working rights in Australia. At this stage, we cannot sponsor a working visa. This is an in-person, on-location, in-studio position.

Big Ant Studios is looking for a talented Junior UI Artist to join our Melbourne studio. This is a rare opportunity to kickstart your career in game development, helping us build the interfaces for some of the biggest sports titles on console and PC.

You will be part of a collaborative environment, working under the guidance of our Art Director and UX Designer, while being mentored by our UI Development Team. You will learn how to take high-concept visual designs and turn them into functional, beautiful in-game assets.

You are determined to find the best solution for the player, flexible enough to pivot when technical constraints arise, and possess a genuine curiosity for current trends in both gaming and global UI/UX standards.

You are an aspiring designer who is ready to learn the ropes of sports simulation. You are comfortable to iterate on your work based on feedback and possess a genuine curiosity for how UI and UX function in a complex, data-heavy gaming environment.

How to Stand Out:

We value potential and technical curiosity. To stand out, ensure your portfolio includes a breakdown of a UI project (this can be a student project or personal redesign). Show us your process: how you handled a menu, an icon set, or a HUD, and explain why you made your design choices.

Core Areas of Focus:

  • Asset Creation: Crafting high-quality UI elements including iconography, buttons, and HUD components that align with established art styles.
  • Layout Support: Assisting in the creation of screens and menus for deep sports management sims, ensuring clarity and ease of use.
  • Systemic Consistency: Working within style guides and component libraries to ensure visual cohesion across massive titles.
  • Implementation Learning: Working with our developers to understand the pipeline for getting your 2D assets into the game engine with pixel-perfect precision.

Experience Required:

  • 0-2 Years Experience: Industry experience is a plus, but a standout Graduate portfolio is equally valued.
  • The Tools: Proficiency in Figma, Adobe Photoshop, and Illustrator.
  • The Basics: A strong grasp of typography, colour theory, and visual hierarchy.
  • The Folio: A portfolio that demonstrates a clean aesthetic and a clear understanding of user interface principles.

Bonus Experience:

  • Motion & 3D: Experience with 2D animation (After Effects or similar) or 3D software (Blender/Maya) to elevate static menus.
  • Technical Pipeline: Familiarity with XAML, C#, Javascript or implementation within Unreal Engine/Unity.

You also need to be:

  • Eager & Open-Minded: You thrive on feedback and are excited to refine your designs based on playtest data and senior mentorship.
  • Driven & Accountable: You take pride in your work and ensure your tasks are completed to a high standard.
  • A Natural Problem-Solver: You love puzzles and are prepared to learn the technical complexities involved in data-rich sports design.
  • Detail-Oriented: You always strive for quality, ensuring every asset you produce is clean, cohesive, and on-brand.

A Creative Learner: You are always looking for fresh ways to present information and stay up-to-date with current UI trends.
