IMPORTANT: Please note you will need to have working rights in Australia. At this stage, we cannot sponsor a working visa. This is an in-person, on-location, in-studio position.
Big Ant Studios is looking for a highly talented and motivated UI Artist to play a key role in our Melbourne studio. Join us in crafting the interface for some of the biggest sports titles on console and PC.
You will work at the intersection of gameplay and presentation, collaborating directly with the Art Director, UX Designer, and UI Development Team. You’ll be the bridge between high-concept visual design and technical implementation, ensuring our interfaces are as functional as they are beautiful.
You are determined to find the best solution for the player, flexible enough to pivot when technical constraints arise, and possess a genuine curiosity for current trends in both gaming and global UI/UX standards.
How to Stand Out:
You value the “why” behind the design. To stand out, ensure your portfolio includes a case study or breakdown of a complex UI screen (ideally a stats page, inventory or skill tree). Show us how you organised dense information into a clean, user-friendly layout.
Core Areas of Focus:
- Data Architecture: Designing scalable UI systems capable of handling sports management sims and complex statistics without sacrificing clarity.
- Broadcast Fidelity: Creating “TV-style” overlays, HUDs, and motion graphics that replicate the look and feel of a professional sports broadcast.
- Systemic Design: Developing and maintaining comprehensive style guides and component libraries to ensure visual cohesion across massive titles.
- Technical Implementation: Bridging the gap between 2D layouts and engine-ready assets, ensuring pixel-perfect execution in the final build.
Experience Required:
- 3+ Years in Games: Proven experience in a UI-focused role within a game development environment.
- The Tools: High-level proficiency in Figma, Adobe Photoshop, and Illustrator.
- The Craft: A deep passion and understanding of typography, colour theory, and hierarchy.
- Portfolio: A strong portfolio demonstrating your process from concept to final outcome.
Bonus Experience:
- Motion & 3D: Experience with 2D animation (After Effects or similar) or 3D software (Blender/Maya) to elevate static menus.
- Technical Pipeline: Familiarity with XAML, C#, Javascript or implementation within Unreal Engine/Unity.
You also need to be:
- Flexible & Open-Minded: You thrive on feedback and are comfortable refining your designs based on playtest data, technical constraints and system changes.
- Driven & Accountable: You take full ownership of your features, from the first sketch to the final pixel in-game.
- Solution-Oriented: You rise to the challenge and love solving puzzles. You are prepared for (and embrace) the technical complexities of data-rich design.
- Detail-Obsessed: You always strive for quality, ensuring every icon, transition, and font choice feels premium, cohesive and on-brand.
- A Creative Navigator: You are innovative enough to find fresh ways to display complex data while keeping the user experience intuitive.
